Joshua had faith in God. Joshua faced the biggest test of his faith when Moses asked him to select some men and go to fight Amalek. The Amalekites had attacked Israel from behind during one of Israel’s weakest moments.
Deuteronomy 25:17-18 NKJV
“Remember what Amalek did to you on the way as you were coming out of Egypt, how he met you on the way and attacked your rear ranks, all the stragglers at your rear, when you were tired and weary; and he did not fear God.”
Moses asked Joshua to select and lead an army to fight Amalek.
Exodus 17:9 NKJV
“And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose us some men and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in my hand.”
Israel had never fought before. They were coming out of 400 years of slavery. They had no standing army and no experienced fighters.
The Amalekites were battle hardened desert warriors. Naturally speaking, Joshua and his recruits were no match for Amalek.
Moses’s instruction looked like a suicide mission, but Joshua had faith. He obeyed Moses by faith.
Exodus 17:10 NKJV
“So Joshua did as Moses said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.”
Aaron and Hur noticed that the battle was going back and forth.
Exodus 17:11 NKJV
“And so it was, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.”
The lifting of Moses’s hands gave Joshua a supernatural advantage and he prevailed. When Moses’s hands dropped, Amalek prevailed because naturally they were the stronger and more experienced army.
Despite sometimes experiencing defeat when Moses’s hand dropped, Joshua never gave up. He continued fighting until Aaron and Hur held Moses’s hand up continuously.
Exodus 17:12 NKJV
“But Moses’ hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.”
Joshua finally won a decisive victory.
Exodus 17:13 NKJV
“So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.”
May you win many decisive and great victories. May you be strengthened in your inner man to persevere in all your endeavours, in Jesus’s name.
