The Unusual Mercies of God 11
By Rev Robert Ampiah-Kwofi
The “woman by the well” now wanted the living water so much, that she was ready to get it from a Jew.
However, Christ wanted to meet her husband first.
John 4:16 NKJV
“Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, and come here.”
Her life was very complicated.
She was presently living with a man out of wedlock.
She was ashamed of her present situation, so she left out all the unpleasant facts, and told Jesus the barest truth.
Jesus knew everything about her life already by the spiritual gift of the “word of knowledge.”
John 4:18 NIV
“The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
The woman was amazed that a total stranger could know all about her life. She revised her estimation of Him.
John 4:19 NIV
“Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.”
She now saw Him as a prophet.
She had a religious question for Him.
John 4:20 NIV
“Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”
As a Samaritan, she had been raised in the perverted worship of her people.
She however had some doubts about it.
She also knew the tenets of the Jewish religion.
She wanted Jesus to tell her which religion was authentic.
John 4:21 NIV
“Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.”
Amazingly, Jesus backed neither religion.
Jesus said a time was coming when worship would be in the hearts of men.
Places of worship wouldn’t be vital anymore.
God would live in the hearts of men.
John 4:24 NKJV
“God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
God was looking for such people to worship Him.
May you be the worshipper that God is looking for.
May God be glorified in both your body and spirit, in Jesus’ name.
